The End From the Beginning
By paburke
Summary: The end of the world started like this: Mike Ross got himself kidnapped.
Fusion: Firefly/Suits

The end of the world started like this: Mike Ross got himself kidnapped.  Of course, it didn’t seem like a kidnapping at the time.  At first, even Harvey thought that he gotten high, or had been flaky or any number of immature actions.  But he wasn’t at his apartment and his bike was.  Then Jenny called because Mike had missed a friendly coffee date.  After that, Trevor appeared in the ten steps between the law office and Ray’s waiting open door.  Trevor was white-faced and scared.  He shoved a manila envelope into Harvey’s hands and disappeared into the New York crowds.

The envelope was from Mike.  The first note read, ‘in the event of my death or disappearance.’  Typical Mike dramatics, except that Mike had been missing for three months.  The rest of the papers didn’t seem to connect to any one thing as it detailed land transactions from all over the world and included newspaper clippings with certain clues highlighted in a typical Mike manner.  Harvey tried to piece together whatever it was that Mike was trying to tell him.  He was unsuccessful.  His smarts –top five percent of his graduating class at Harvard- couldn’t compare to Mike’s genius.  He knew that it had to do with a small company named ‘Blue Sun,’ anything more was too cryptic for Harvey.

Finally, a letter arrived at the office.  Donna recognized the handwriting immediately and brought it to his attention.  Together, they read the gibberish, the half-finished quotes and the remembrances of events that never happened.  It was a code and Mike’s message was in the parts of the quotes that he hadn’t written: ‘They’re hurting us.  Help me.’  He was kind enough to include an address.  Harvey and Donna pulled strings and called in favors.  They ran into a lot of roadblocks and Harvey even got arrested once.

Jessica was furious and threatened to fire him again if he didn’t give up his stupid quest to find out what happened to his missing associate.  Most of the time, Harvey wasn’t sure why he was risking so much for a young man that he had barely known for a year.  Mike’s problems were not Harvey’s and Harvey had a promising career ahead of him if he didn’t screw it up.  Then the world exploded into a civil war and no one really cared enough about legality to want lawyers.

Harvey and Donna didn’t stop though and with the war, no one was following their movements.  In the end, they found Mike with a lot of money and a little luck. Then it took a double dose of both to extradite Mike from the ‘scientific study.’

Mike was a mess.  If there was a fine line between genius and insanity, the doctors had punted Mike off the cliff.  Harvey and Donna hid Mike for as long as they dared.  Then they heard that the civil war had destroyed Earth’s ecosystem.  The humans were leaving.  Harvey went looking for a private spaceship to join the crew.

He found Serenity.  He wasn’t surprised that Jessica was the second-in-command.  He wasn’t even surprised at the gun strapped to her hip and her skill with it.  No, Harvey was surprised that she was married –again- and this time to a funny pilot that played with dinosaur toys.

That was how Harvey decided that it was the end of the world as he knew it.

Faith had been cursing her luck when motley crew made their way to the post office.  When the Powers had made it painfully clear that a Slayer was needed to (wo)man this particular post, Buffy and Faith had flipped a coin for the job.

Faith had lost.

With the exception of the previous post master’s fiery death, a Slayer was not needed.

Then Faith laid eyes on the Seer/Slayer failed experiment that had run away from Wolfram and Hart.

The Seer/Slayer blinked at Faith.  “You’re like me.”

Faith huffed out a laugh.  “In more ways than you can imagine, mei-mei.”

“Are you crazy too?” the merc asked.

Faith grinned.  “People used to say ‘going postal’ instead of crazy.”

“I ain’t never heard of that.”

“It’s from the Earth-That-Was,” mei-mei explained.  “You’re coming with us.”

“I am?”

“Yes.  Don’t worry, Serenity likes strays.”

Later, after all the yelling was done and Faith had quit her job and gathered her things, she stood in the bay and smelled filth, sweat, blood, death, life, sex, and home.  For some reason the ship smelled like Sunnydale: all of its good and bad parts.

Maybe, just maybe, Faith had won that coin toss after all.

Faith mentally tugged on the Scythe again and unlike last time, it appeared in her hands.  B was going to be pissed: Faith had stolen it away from her during her clean-up, but Faith needed it more than B right now.  That was how the Scythe worked: it always appeared to the Slayer that needed it the most.  Faith liked to claimed that Buffy was Fate's favorite, but Fate was probably the most fair 'parent' in the 'verse.

Faith jumped into the fight with the Reavers, protecting River's back.  She heard the first mate and the mercenary swear now that there was a second friendly to shoot around.  She heard the doc hurry to the infirmary prepare for the inevitable injuries.  She heard Serenity revv, Kaylee and Mal had it ready to go.

Faith had a sister to fight over the toys with, she had a sister to protect from the bullies.  She had bullies to kill.  She had a couple of friends to watch her back and more friends ready with the get-away vehicle.  She also had a friend to put her back together after the fight.  Faith had everything that she could possibly want.

Faith had a home.

Prompt: Firefly, Tams (+ crew), River sacrificed everything to pull her big brother out of a secret Alliance facility
Cross: Sentinel

Mal stood and let Kaylee introduce the passengers to him.  The Shepherd was annoying but it was the girl that stood out.  She was young and rich and smart.  She had no business on a transport ship like Serenity, especially without an escort.  She tried to keep to herself, which Mal appreciated, and was constantly checking on her cargo, which Mal didn’t appreciate.  Still it was something of a surprise to see the seemingly innocuous passenger holding a gun on River Tam and threatening to call the Alliance on her.

Mal shot the passenger and didn’t care that he never learned the man’s true name.  Serenity survived the Reavers and it was time for Mal to discover the source of the new Alliance trouble.  It took both Zoe and Jayne to hold the tiny girl back as Mal opened the cryo.  To his surprise, Mal found a naked man sleeping inside.  His brain twisted sideways trying to figure out why the Alliance wanted this man returned.

“Is he a criminal?” he demanded of River.  “A slave?  Are you planning to sell him?”  Mal supposed that he was pretty enough if you were sly.  But normally, the flesh trade started younger and they moved them as cheap as possible.

“No.  Please,” she begged.  “He’s not ready to be wakened.  You could damage…”

The man chose that particular moment to wake.  He screamed and screamed and tried to scratch his skin.  River shook off Jayne and Zoe and they let her.  She was only concerned with the man.  She spoke to him quietly, too quietly for the crew to hear anything.  It should have been too quietly for the man to hear her, but he was calming.  Finally her voiced raised a bit.  “Simon, Simon?  I’m going to touch you now.”

Simon flinched but allowed the contact.  It took the man a couple moments to focus his eyes on River’s face, but when he did, he recognized her.  “River?  River?  It’s too loud.  It’s too much.  River?  I can’t do this.”  The man continued the litany and River gathered the bigger man in her arms.  She covered his nakedness with her own body.

“Shhh, it’ll be alright,” she crooned.

Mal interrupted the tender moment.  “What the hell is this?”

River let the man nose her hair and kept a hand on his head.  Her face was steel as she turned to glare at Mal.  “This is my brother, Simon.”

River stood in front of the crew.  Her back was ramrod straight and she didn’t cower for being shorter than them all.  “I’m a genius, everything comes easy to me.  But Simon, Simon was special.  He could smell dinner when we were out playing the yard.  He could hear our parents whisper down the hall.  He could identify visitors a mile down the road.  He could be a real brat about it too.  I could deduce most anything, but he… Simon knew.  He wanted to take all those abilities and be a doctor.  He figured that if he could smell the disease and hear the heart beat that he could be the best doctor in the ‘Verse.”

Jayne moved to pour himself tea impatiently and River veered back to her story.  “Two men came and said they were from The Academy.  They said that they had experience with Simon’s abilities.  They said that they could help.  By that time, Simon was having trouble controlling his senses.  They be working at our level one moment, his the next and then be completely gone for a day or two.  He was worried that his own health would prevent him from becoming a doctor.  We had never heard of the Academy before but they said that they could train Simon to use his senses toward whatever goal he wanted.  They promised that they would get him into the best medical school in the ‘Verse when he was old enough.  I didn’t want him to go, but Simon wanted to be a doctor.  He left with the men.  At first, he sent letters overflowing with accomplishments, then the time between letters began to lengthen and the letters themselves got shorter and shorter before they stopped altogether.

“A couple months later, I received a letter, rambling about events that had never happened and words that I had coached him on were misspelled.  The letter itself had changed content, from medical applications of his senses to what Simon would be able to accomplish as a soldier.  It was a code.  ‘They’re hurting us.  Help.’  So I tried everything, contacted everyone to get him out.”

“How did you do it?” Zoe asked.

“Money and luck.”  River paused for a moment and then drew herself even straighter.  “I used sex to find out Simon’s location, but it was mostly luck.  Some people contacted me and said that if I paid for it, they could get Simon out.  They held their side of the bargain.  I took Simon and I’m going to hide him until he’s better.  He will get better.”  There was a determination in her voice that the Serenity crew had to accept.

Jayne had his head tilted and was eyeing River’s body.  “How old are you?”  He had probably stopped listening the moment the girl had admitted to whoring for her brother.

River wasn’t ashamed and she didn’t back down.  “Old enough.”

Jayne hitched up his belt.  “Are you still selling?”

“You don’t have information that will assist me.”

“What are your plans?” Wash asked.

“I’m going to find someplace safe on a Rim planet far from everyone else and I’ll coax my brother out of his pain.”

“There’s trouble with that plan,” Mal told her.  “You stay in one place for long and the Alliance will come lookin’ and if you go too far out, the Reavers will get you.”

River eyed Mal suspiciously.  “I understood Reavers to be crazy ship faring tales.”

“No, ma’am,” Mal shook his head.  “Reavers are very real.”

“I don’t care.  Between my genius and Simon’s senses, we’ll survive.”

Mal nodded.  “Well then, it sounds like you and your brother are useful and we could always find room for useful on this ship.”

Mal watched the hardness of her experience fall from her eyes.  River started looking less like a defiant genius and more like a lost kid just found.  Mal escaped to the bridge before the girl could follow some fool notion and hug him.

How did I forget to tell you how much I loved the FF/BTVS cross? I find I love it when Faith gets to be her own person, a slayer in her own right, as much as I love Buffy. (Which I guess was some of what Buffy was trying to tell her all those years ago? I dunno...) Serenity could be the perfect little home for her if she'll let them be. Although I can see Mal pitching fits when he finds out all that she is.
